Phuri Sherpa is from Gaigat in Khumbu. He is 39 years old and has worked as a cook for Himalayan Experience for 7 years. Phuri has both a son and a daughter. Phuri learnt to cook whilst working for Asian Trekking for 5 years, prior to joining Himalayan Experience.
What do you like about working for Himalayan Experience?
I like everything about working for Himalayan Experience. Even though I have to get up at 5am and prepare the morning tea and the breakfast for the clients. I normally go to bed at 9pm but even though I work all day, I really enjoy it.
I work for Himalayan Experience for about five months per year. Before we go on expedition we have to shop for the food and we have to pack it all carefully. I am responsible for packing the food – the whole process takes 20 days.
The remaining months I farm- we farm rice and vegetables and we sell it in the village and in Kathmandu.
What is your favourite meal to cook?
I love cooking for the clients and it does not matter what I cook, I am always happy when in the kitchen.
