NEPAL EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

Himex Releif Fund - Earthquake appeal

On 25 April 2015 a 7.9 magnitude earth quake struck Nepal.

At the time Himalayan Experience had expeditions on Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. The earth quake generated a large avalanche that swept through the middle section of the Everest Base Camp destroying everything in its path killing 19 local Sherpa staff and western climbers, but also seriously injured another 53 climbers and staff. Himalayan Experience was very lucky to receive little damage to our camp and so we were able to help look after the homeless and injured for the immediate nights after the avalanche.

Mountain Experience our sister company and agent in Nepal also had several trekking groups in various parts of Nepal at the time of the earth quake. One group had just returned to Lukla so were able to return to Kathmandu two days later. Another group was in the Thame Valley and they decided to stay in the Thame village for 3 weeks to help with building repairs. Another group was in the Makalu area and were able to be rescued by helicopter 3 days later as they had lost much of their equipment. Unfortunately four of our staff were stuck behind some mules that were on the trail and were therefore unable to get out of danger when a land slide came dome on the tail. We were only able to recover one of these bodies. And we also had another group of 3 Indonesian members and 7 support staff in the Langtang village. Again the earth quake triggered a huge avalanche that swept down and totally buried the entire village of 300 houses and approximately 500 people.

All of our staff are insured whilst working for us, so eventually after a long process each of these families will get insurance money, however it is the goal of our relief fund to double the insurance pay out of about $10,000 per missing staff member.

Although all our Everest, Lhotse and Makalu staff are safe and no family members have died, but practically every staff member has received varying amounts of damage to their home. This also includes our office staff in Kathmandu. A second earth quake one week later amplified the initial damage to homes. We all know that without the help of our Sherpa staff our mountaineering expeditions and our personal experiences in Nepal would not be safe and successful. They have supported us so much in the past, so I can only urge you to please support them in return as they recover from this natural disaster.

If we are able to raise funds for their rebuilding programs we will distribute cash to those who need it the most in a fair and reasonable system. If we are able to raise the full funding require then those families will be most appreciative. If we come short of the total amount required we will distribute on a percentage basis. If we have a surplus of funds then we will extend this to others in the same community.

I urge you to please help. I am sorry but this fund does not have tax credits to donors, however all money raised will be sent to Nepal, Himalayan Experience will cover all administration and bank fee costs.
