Manaslu Expedition #39 September 2015
Making great progress.
It is a very different year from last here at Manaslu. Although it rained on Puja day, it has been brilliantly fine and sunny these last few days. This has meant that we have been making great progress on the hill. Today the ropes were fixed with a combined effort between Himex, Altitude Junkies and 7 Summits Sherpas. Our members have all been to C1 to sleep apart from Masha who has almost caught up by doing two day trips there. Tomorrow everyone will again go to C1 to stay and will then do a day trip to C2 before a small band of bad weather will come. We considered to go today and try and stay at C2, but really the amount of effort required and for the possibility of just one night at C2 does not make much sense. Effort verses acclimatisation advantage.
Sun cream time
The route to C2 seems to bee steeper at the bottom but more easy on the upper part, however we did have to put in a 4 section ladder about half way up. Just as well we brought more ladders at the end of last season. Every year it seems that we need more ladders here on Manaslu and already we have used 11 in order to make the route this year.
First difficult section
With this fine weather we also see that the temperatures are warmer than normal and we still have only had one night that it went below zero here at BC. This morning as the Sherpas were travelling between C1 and C2 there was a large avalanche from the adjacent ridge of Manaslu. I was surprised to see that this had not already slid before we arrived as this is normally one of my indicator slopes. The height of the head wall shows me how much new snow has fallen. So although sounding somewhat frightening, this is actually a good indication.
